Salzburg Festival 2021: Currentzis conducts Mozart / 2021

At the Salzburg Festival 2021, the musicAeterna Orchestra conducted by Teodor Currentzis performed the last symphonies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – No. 40 K. 550 and No. 41 K. 551 Jupiter. The two pinnacles of Mozart’s symphonic heritage are interconnected: the classic wrote symphonies No. 39–41 in one short period of just a few fruitful weeks in 1788. In the concert the two symphonies – the two sides of Mozart’s unfathomable genius – are joined by works that are close to them both in spirit and the time of creation: the orchestral Masonic Funeral Music in C minor, the recitative and aria of Donna Anna from the finale of the opera Don Giovanni and the chorus from the spiritual cantata Davide penitente created in 1785.

R. Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier (Salzburger Festspiele) / 2014

Verdi: Falstaff (Salzburger Festspiele) / 2013

This 2013 Salzburg Festival performance of Falstaff, Giuseppe Verdis late masterwork and crowning achievement, features conductor Zubin Mehta and the Vienna Philharmonic. The staging thought up by Italian director Damiano Michieletto moves the action from a fictitious London to that special care home, the Casa Verdi, a place rich in memories of great days past and impressions of a real-time present. Ambrogio Maestri seems a tailor-made Falstaff. His physique is just right for the part, as are his powerful voice, flair for drama and feeling for the Verdi style. (New York Times)

Il barbiere di Siviglia / 1988

Il barbiere di Siviglia è un'opera buffa di Gioachino Rossini, in due atti, su libretto di Cesare Sterbini, tratto dalla commedia omonima francese di Pierre Beaumarchais del 1775. L'opera fu commissionata a Rossini da Francesco Sforza Cesarini, impresario del teatro di patrocinio della sua famiglia, l'attuale Teatro Argentina, fatto erigere nel 1732 da suo nonno Giuseppe Sforza. Nel dicembre del 1815, Francesco Sforza Cesarini si accordò con l'allora venticinquenne Gioacchino Rossini perché scrivesse un'opera musicale di carattere gioioso e scherzoso che dovesse rappresentarsi al successivo carnevale 1816, ma egli morì d'infarto il 16 febbraio 1816, pochi giorni prima della "prima". La rappresentazione de Il barbiere, comunque, si tenne lo stesso.

L'Italiana in Algeri / 1987

Live performance from the Schwetzinger Festspiele, 1987. At the age of 21, Italian composer Giacchino Rossini penned the masterful comic opera “L’Italiana in Algeri” (“The Italian Girl in Algiers”) in less than a month. The composer’s youthful exuberance comes across in this infectious 1987 performance. Though she’s known mainly for her Wagner roles, acclaimed German mezzo-soprano Doris Soffel shines in the title role of Isabella. Ralf Weikert conducts, and Mauro Pagano oversees sets and costumes.

Fortunatissimo spettacolo andato in scena per la prima volta a Pesaro nel 1982 e ripreso nel 1992 al Festival di Schwetzingen, questo Tancredi ha segnato una svolta nel recupero di interesse per il Rossini serio. La messinscena di Pizzi è rimasta giustamente celebre per eleganza e fantasia, così come la direzione di Gelmetti, delicata e vibrante al tempo stesso. Di livello assoluto, sul piano vocale e su quello interpretativo, le prove di Bernadette Manca di Nissa e di Maria Bayo nei difficili ruoli dei protagonisti.

Don Giovanni's list of romantic conquests reaches into the hundreds. But his reputation as a lothario puts him in danger as the women he's betrayed -- and their suitors -- begin to seek revenge. A modern-day setting proves the timeless nature of Mozart's popular opera, performed with the Vienna Philharmonic as part of an epic presentation of all 22 of the composer's stage works at the 2006 Salzburg Festival, in honor of his 250th birthday.
