Questo concerto venne registrato presso l'International Music Festival di Friburgo nel 1987, per festeggiare il 35esimo anniversario di carriera del Modern Jazz Quartet. Ufficialmente sciolti nel 1974, la band decise di riformarsi per soddisfare un vasto pubblico ancora desideroso della loro musica. Tramite ideale per il formidabile talento compositivo del pianista John Lewis, così come per il soave vibrafono di Milt 'Bags' Jackson, il MJQ nacque come rappresentante negli anni cinquanta del 'cool jazz', originariamente proposto da Miles Davis. Accademici, impeccabilmente abbigliati e, grazie a Lewis, particolarmente influenzati dalla musica classica e barocca, rifiutarono gli eccessi del bebop a favore di un approccio più sobrio al jazz. Il sound del MJQ divenne l'elemento fondamentale del modernismo degli anni sessanta.

Ricavato dalle registrazioni degli spettacoli tenuti il 13 e il 14 febbraio 1998 presso il Teatro Brancaccio di Roma, è stato pubblicato poco tempo dopo la morte del cantautore. Fabrizio De André permise alla Rai di registrare i concerti, a detta sua, "per evitare che si continuasse a mandare in onda sempre e solo il concerto registrato a Sarzana nel 1991". L'album è stato pubblicato dapprima in VHS e in seguito anche su supporto audio: in formato CD e in due volumi.

Trio Rypdal, Vitous, Gurtu Live in Concert Masters of Jazz Fusion (1994) /

Ripreso dal vivo al Jazz Open Festival di Stoccarda, il trio deliziò la platea con alcune grandi composizioni, che fondono sottili ritmi indiani con elementi di jazz e rock moderni. La formazione scelta per l' occasione prevedeva Terje Rypdal (chitarra), Miroslav Vitous (basso) e Trilok Gurtu (percussioni). Concepito per illustrare la convivenza tra diverse culture di un comune spazio musicale, questo concerto ha visto la partecipazione di alcuni dei musicisti più innovativi ed è stato uno dei pezzi forti alla Jazz Open.
