Black Hole Mama / 2017
A restless suburb in the Northeast-Helsinki. A drunk is raving violently in the hallway. A post box frame is stuck on his arm. There is blood on the stairs. Black Hole Mama does not romanticize poverty. Some residents have clearly lost control over their own lives and consume alcohol in unhealthy amounts. Still, as the rascals and yobs tell their life stories, it is difficult not to be surprised and touched. The black and white imagery emphasizes the nostalgic yet timeless mood of the film. It is easy like a summer afternoon, sunny with just a hint of sadness.

Concerning three groups of children from disparate upbringings, A Black Hole is a Black Hole in the Ground intimately depicts the strange, ephemeral realities that arise on evenings of play, when dimensions of space and time, not fully cemented by adulthood, begin to dissolve. Parking lots, hen houses, and brownstone apartments become the dwellings of many strange creatures; coyotes are rendered forest spirits, neighbors as martians, and night crawlers as flesh-eating meteorite worms. Employing sci-fi, documentary and ethnography techniques, a state of mind particular to early youth is sublimated - weight is lent to shadows as vast as space, ripe with discoveries both minuscule and immense.

Documentary on nature's ultimate abyss, the black hole. It is the darkest thing in the universe and its gravity is so powerful that not even light can escape. Most start out as brilliant stars which, after millions of years, eventually collapse forming a bottomless pit from which there is no escape. Narrated by actor John Hurt and directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Richard Smith, the program is a journey into interstellar space to explore these mysterious "prisons of light", via an imaginary computer-generated space ship. Guides for the journey include Professor Stephen Hawking, Britain's Astronomer Royal Sir Martin Rees, and Homer Simpson. The program also examines the history surrounding black holes, from the first conception of them in 1859 to the present day.

On the foothills of Uummannaq mountain, four cybergoth teens are fighting depression. Water contamination spreads throughout the village pipelines and one cybergoth finds herself laying on a hospital bed. The film is a visual poem narrated by a group of young inuit women, reflecting on ongoing suicide attempts and the separation from their families. The cybergoths remind us of a post-apocalypse future, that is to say, the apocalyptic qualities of the present; a fragile reality where national, communal, environmental, and mental stability is at risk.
Black Hole Radio / 1992
Black Hole Radio is an installation that consists of taped confessions of callers of the New York City Phone Confession Line and video images. The Phone Confession Line is based on anonymous callers ringing to confess on things they had done or thought like adultery, theft, murder or regrets. Thereafter anybody could call and listen to the confessions. Although making a confession was free, listening to a confession costs money. After Cohen got his hands on the confessions, he used them as an audio heartbeat to accompany video-images of every day life in New York City he had taken over the years. This installation is a portrait of the city with its dark secrets, hushed voices and nocturnal images. In this way Cohen tries to bring across an experience to the viewer that relies on absence, waiting and the effort to hear something in the dark.

A 16mm film about how to make your own optical soundtrack, it is also a playful film about space exploration. As the film progresses, the nature of the soundtrack comes to speak for the way space exploration is part of a larger, systemic repetition of colonialism. The film is purposefully queer, handmade and anti-illusionist as a means of deconstructing established narrative conventions and audience expectations.
