Il film si dilunga eccessivamente nel mostrare gli inseguimenti ed i tentennamenti dei suoi protagonisti. Wang Xiao-shuai, nel narrare una vicenda non distante da quella di Ladri di biciclette, in cui un ragazzino trova lavoro presso un corriere, una sorta di Pony Express in bicicletta, traccia lo spaccato di una società assolutamente divisa tra il consumismo sfrenato metropolitano e l'attaccamento a tradizioni rurali del passato. La ricerca della bicicletta "rubata", fonte di guadagno per Guei, pertanto un oggetto prezioso, offre lo spunto alla cinepresa per vagabondare tra le strade di Pechino, dove, malgrado tutto, sembra ancora possibile trovare e scoprire valori come la solidarietà e l'amicizia. Bravissimi gli attori, ragazzi che non sembrano aver raggiunto la maggiore età e bravo il regista della sesta generazione, Wang Xiaoshuai, per aver raccontato in modo realistico, ma non privo di poesia, una storia apparentemente semplice.

Tony si sveglia nella sua stanza. Ha compiuto da poco sedici anni e vive con preoccupazione e fastidio il riconoscimento di essere passato alla maggiore età. Si alza fra le urla della famiglia. Esce in bicicletta. Di fronte alla scuola decide di non entrare e prosegue il suo giro per la città fino alla spiaggia di North Shields. La cinepresa segue il ragazzo nella visita dei luoghi adiacenti alla spiaggia mentre il sonoro manda la voce fuori campo del suo pensiero e i suoni (e le voci) d'ambiente. La voce dei suoi pensieri in fuori campo sembra parzialmente ispirata al romanzo Ulisse del 1922 di James Joyce. L'improvviso incontro con il proprietario di una baracca in cui è entrato, lo fa fuggire.

Les Bicyclettes de Belsize / 1968

A 1968 British musical short film (30 mins) starring Judy Huxtable and Anthony May. It was directed by Douglas Hickox. It tells the story of a young man (May) cycling around the Hampstead (NW3) area of London on a Raleigh RSW16. After crashing into a billboard he falls in love with a fashion model (Huxtable) depicted on it. Despite the title, the Belsize Park area does not actually feature. There is almost no spoken dialogue, and the soundtrack to the film is musical virtually throughout. The title song of the film has been a hit for Mireille Mathieu and Engelbert Humperdinck (a top ten hit in the UK and a top 40 hit in the USA) amongst others. The title is derivative of the French film, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg; apart from a musical theme there is no other obvious link.
