Greening the Desert / 2007

Permaculture expert Geoff Lawton describes how he and a team of volunteers grew an oasis in arid, salty lowland, despite extremely high temperatures and minimal irrigation. The site is the lowest dryland expanse on Earth: a plain in Jordan, two kilometres northeast of the Dead Sea, and 400 metres below sea level.

The cats live on the other, and never cross over the line, until an evil spirit convinces one of the cats to cross the line. Chaos ensues until Mighty Mouse arrives to defeat the evil spirit cat in a battle in the sky. The evil spirit cat crashes to the ground and burns up in a flaming pile!

With over 120 major acting credits in film and television, Susan Oliver was literally a household name in the 1960's. She set a number of world records as a pilot and was one of the only women directing major TV shows in the 1980's. And yet many people don't even remember her name today. The Green Line / 2004

In The Green Line, for which the axiom was ‘sometimes the political is poetic, sometimes the poetic is political’, Alÿs walks holding a punctured can of dribbling green paint along the contested width of the so-called Green Line established between Israel and its neighbours following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. In formal terms, The Green Line is a reenactment of an earlier work, The Leak (1996), in which the artist took a can dribbling blue paint for a walk and installed the empty container in the gallery. By recontextualising The Leak in geopolitical terms, Alÿs relocates the tensions in the work from those formal ideas of action and painting to questions of maps and territories and who has the right to live where.

The Bogus Green / 1951

Advance man Brass McGannon is nearly arrested for passing counterfeit money while promoting his circus' next stop. Returning to the circus, he learns that the Treasury Department suspects someone in the circus is responsible for the bogus dough appearing wherever the circus visits and suspicion falls on the show's newest employees. Meanwhile the alcoholic sideshow barker falls off the wagon when his beautiful daughter returns unexpectedly.

The Green Hand / 1940

In 1932, University of Georgia agriculture professor Paul W. Chapman wrote a novel about the Future Farmers of America (FFA), The Green Hand, in which joining FFA improved the life of a young delinquent, Fred Dale. In 1939, Sears-Roebuck & Co. sponsored the filmed version of The Green Hand and shot the film in Athens, Georgia, casting townfolk and university professors as its main characters. The main character, Fred Dale, is played by UGA sophomore Alpha Fowler, Jr., the son of a state legislator. A "big man on campus" in the 1940s, Fowler, Jr. went on to his own career as a state legislator. Other men prominent in Georgia and UGA agriculture appeared in the film.
