Removable Media / 2012
In this short video work, fragments of found footage suggest the analysis of bodies in space: humans, technology, architecture and movement, through the process of swelling industrialization and urbanization to a point where humanity is redefined by the machinery it has created. In viewing the process of montage we can be seen to occupy multiple spaces through the same screen, fragmented. Similarly, the continuous physical timeline of a twenty-first century individual can be seen as fragmented across multiple forms of information. Where is this information... and who, or what, is processing it? Darren Banks (UK) incorporates found and made film footage into sculpture and installation to explore ideas about domesticity, defunct technologies, cinema and the unknown. His work questions the perception of sculpture in relation to objects, film and memory.
Multi-Thousand Picture Show / 1996
Picture montage was a central aspect in the early history of visual media. As early as the 16th century, techniques such as the folding picture montage anticipated those used in film today. Other examples of early forms of montage are transparencies, picture puzzles and blow books, which direct the gaze towards hidden information. In the myriorame, the multi-thousand picture-show, it is possible to assemble infinite landscapes.

Neige pour media froid / 2009
I was working there as an assistant and had to digitize the students' videos, and I was intrigued by a sequence of rushes filmed in some architect's chalet lost in the woods and only accessible by helicopter. I filmed the pictures on the screen while they were digitizing, and made my own editing with some kind of mystical connotation. I intensified the strangeness of this place by working on the sound (radio interference) adding some furtive and quite ghostly apparitions of myself. When I watch this film now, I can think it has a lot to do with the horror movies which were my delight as a teenager. But it's more of a joke about this omnipotence artists are credited with by society — this idea of artists being able to venture on psychic territories that no one else can reach.

Mediations (towards a remake of Soundings) / 1986
“The beginning of a remake of an earlier work [Soundings, 1979] in which I wanted to extend the reflexivity of each text in relation to the interaction between different physical substances—in this case, sand—and the speaker cone. A loudspeaker fills the screen and I begin to speak, referring to the speaker itself. This is followed by more declarations of what I am doing, ‘…a hand enters the picture….’ A hand filled with sand enters the picture and slowly releases it into the loudspeaker’s cone. Every nuance of speech vibrates the speaker’s cone (or membrane), bouncing the grains of sand into the air. The more I speak about what is happening, the more it changes—or feeds back into—the movement and patterns of the sand."
