In Untitled (2014-15), Laric culls animations from around the world to create a rhythmic, morphing flow of graphic bodies. Set in a blank white space and backed by an ominous soundtrack, these hybrid creatures mutate from human to object to animal to machine. Some changes seem natural—the smooth transition of aging hands—while others are unsettling—humans turning into monsters. Laric intersperses these animated runs with stills of disturbing, digitally-modeled “crossbreeds”—slick machines with lumpy human arms and legs; a melted humanoid in a black oily pool on the ground surrounded by clothing he once wore; a submissive hybrid on its hands and knees in front of a standing woman, who is taking its picture like an animal at the zoo. Together, these images destabilize notions of past and present, original and copy, even human and nonhuman.

As Untitled (1977) opens we see whitish blue streaks close to the camera continually appear and disappear. The background is indistinct, but gradually similar streaks seemingly at a greater distance come into focus, while the foreground streaks grow fuzzier. Soon we guess that we're looking at falling snow, and it seems we're viewing it from a window as he gradually changes the focus from close-up to infinity. Well before the focus change ends, a tannish red mass starts to materialize in the background; as it comes into focus we realize it's a brick wall.

A revealing one-shot portrait of two Nepali newlyweds in a moment of rest and playful interaction, Stephanie Spray's Untitled challenges our perception of two themes at the very core of ethnographic filmmaking: human relationships and the ways in which they can be experienced by the viewer. Only fourteen minutes long, Untitled is uncut, rejecting the implications of edited sequences and also purposefully excluding subtitles over the couple's conversation. The style of the film confronts the history of ethnography as a controversial study of the "other" by refusing us any clear messages or meanings behind what is being presented, challenging the viewer to come up with their own answers to any questions that may arise.

With Untitled, Seoungho Cho continues to refine and heighten the issues he has long pursued in his quietly beautiful work. The source material for this video was filmed in a Korean factory and at Information Technology College in Pusan, Korea, with extensive use of macro-focus and close-up. This intense examination of the behavior of industrial machinery is well suited to the precise, exacting quality of Cho's digital editing, in which "real" images are multiplied, re-sized, and rhythmically sequenced. The soundtrack, composed by the artist, alternates between stretches of silence and periods of eerie noise, complimenting the elegance of this composition.

A minimalist monochromatic film frame is projected through a glass pane fogged via a humidification system. The planular drift of the projected frame alters its course, bending here, diffracting there – keystoning its way through the darkness of a cinematic abyss.

Made from the same footage as Epilogue but in a different order: 1. pan, 2. dissolve-crossfade, 3.freeze.... as opposed topan, freeze, crossfade-dissolve......very different in terms of filmic expectation, recognition, assumptions of anti-narrativity, all whilst watching these small fragments (each film only a few minutes long, each made from the (repeated) opticals of the same very short fragments of several seconds each....)....P.G.
