Bharat è ambientato nel 1947 ai tempi della "partizione" dell'India. Quando al paese fu inferta la lacerante separazione creando i due stati, India e Pakistan. Una divisione fraticida e sanguinaria in cui circa 1 milione di persone persero la vita e molti altri persero le proprie famiglie o ne furono separati. La parte del Pakistan andò alla maggioranza musulmana mentre la parte dell'India alle minoranze indù e sikh. Il 15 agosto del 1947 fu dichiarata l'indipendenza ma una settimana prima molti hindu si ritrovarono dalla parte sbagliata del confine: iniziarono pulizie etniche con susseguenti esodi di massa.
