Perfect sense ritrae vicende apocalittiche e senza effetti speciali, che trasmettono brillantemente una sensazione di claustrofobia, ma è tutto un contorno al messaggio finale, è tutto un espediente per parlare d’amore. La voce fuori campo non si limita a descrivere le vicende ma è rivelatrice; solo con l’ultima frase risulta chiaro ciò che tutto il film ha concorso a far comprendere in modo inconsapevolmente più profondo.
“There was darkness. There is light. There are men and women. There’s food.”There are restaurants. Disease. There’s work. Traffic. The days as we know them, the world as we imagine the world.” si sente mentre una serie di colorate immagini racconta di eventi quotidiani. Alla fine della narrazione cala improvvisamente il buio, e l’attenzione è tutta per l’ultima frase: “It’s dark now. But they feel each others’ breath. And they know all they need to know. They kiss. And they feel each others’ tears on their cheeks. And if there had been anybody left to see them, then they would look like normal lovers, caressing each others’ faces, bodies close together, eyes closed, oblivious to the world around them. Because that is how life goes on. Like that.”
La trama che si sviluppa durante il film e il rapporto sempre più approfonditamente descritto dagli eventi vengono chiariti dalla ‘morale’ finale: dopo essere stati assorbiti dalla storia, e solo grazie alla visione di tutto quanto accade prima si può percepire con più profondità quanto era apparentemente comprensibile anche solo da quest’ultima frase: la sensazione, quando si ama, che non ci siano limiti corporei tra le due essenze, e che gli amanti si fondano in un unico essere. Un’immagine molto più facile da comprendere quando si pensa, nel buio, a un’anima che priva di sensi si tiene stretta ad un’altra.
